Ostia Antica

sprawling 2000+ year old roman archeological site

Spend a day exploring the ruins of ancient Rome's former seaport that was home to 100,000 inhabitants at it's peak in the 2nd century AD. Over a massive 10,000 acre site, Ostia features the ruins of a theater, a forum, public baths, temples, taverns, inns, multi-story apartment buildings, warehouses, marketplaces, marble fountains, statues, frescoes and mosaics.

Only a 30 minute train ride from Rome's Piramide train station, Ostia Antica remains a lightly visited site. You can spend hours roaming Ostia's back alleys and outer neighborhoods without seeing another living soul.
